UoC Forum - Managerial Risk Factors in Medicine

To date, research in the medical community has focused mainly on finding the right medical treatment in order to increase treatment outcomes. Researchers in the field of management science and economics, on the other hand, are interested predominantly in allocating resources and designing systems in order to increase efficiency and profitability.

Our forum aims to combine medicine with management science and economics as two collateral points of view by forming a group that focuses on interdisciplinary research that is concerned with the relationship between system and member characteristics and design and treatment outcomes. Principal investigators of the forum from the medical faculty include Prof. Roth (Neonatology), Prof. Pfaff (Med. Sociology), Prof. Stock (IGKE) and Prof. Stippel (Surgery).

The WiSo faculty will be represented by Prof. Thonemann (Supply Chain Management), Prof. Hank (ISS), Dr. Wiesen (Personnel Economics and HRM) and Prof. Kuntz (Business Administration and Health Care Management), the latter being the intended group coordinator. The primary objective of the forum is to identify managerial risk factors in medicine that positively influence treatment outcomes. We are therefore working to get distinct pilot projects off the ground, each reflecting the basic premise of interdisciplinary in both their research questions and the collaborating researchers in charge:

Project 1: The effect of monetary incentives and feedback on physicians’ performance
(Prof. Wiesen; Prof. Roth; Hr. Martakis, Dr. Halstenberg)

Project 2: The Effect of Leadership Skill and Leaders' Affective Configuration on Outcomes – Safety4NICU
(Prof. Kuntz; Dr. Wittland; Dr. Wilhelm; Prof. Pfaff; Fr. Scholten; Prof. Roth; Hr. Martakis)

Project 3: Exploring the impact of staffing and scheduling on workload in NICUs
(Prof. Kuntz; Dr. Sülz; Prof. Thonemann; Dr. Becker-Peth; Prof. Roth; Hr. Martakis, Fr. Langhammer)

Project 4: Health literacy as a moderator/mediator for patient adherence
(Prof. Kuntz; Prof. Hank; Prof. Stock; Prof. Stippel; Dr. Baltin)

Project 5: Relational Affect, stress and team performance - A longitudinal study on team performance (Dr. Wilhelm; Dr. Wittland; Prof. Stippel; Dr. Baltin)
